Will the New Lumix S5 Signal The End of Panasonic’s M4/3 Journey?

There’s a chance that the smaller, lighter, feature-packed Full Frame Lumix S5 from Panasonic could kill off their Micro Four-Thirds cameras. There’s about to be another new entry-level Full Frame camera in town in the flavor of the Lumix S5 from Panasonic. The launch event for this new L mount camera has been set for September 2nd, 2020, and while this is certainly exciting, the chirp of crickets from Panasonic’s Micro Four Thirds division is deafening. The Lumix S5 is a mini S1, and if speculation is to be believed, this camera will have the same great video features as it’s bigger brother, but it will be packed into a significantly lighter body. If this is the case, it will leave cameras like the long in the tooth GH5s behind, and it may well be the start of the curtains closin...

That time I had my portfolio critiqued – I’m thinking about what Sara said

I’ve had the great privilege of tagging along with Eric Kim for the Gulf Photo Plus (GPP) event in Dubai back in 2014 and 2016. GPP is an annual event: the region’s biggest and only photography festival, bringing the world’s best photographers and instructors to Dubai to share their knowledge and experience with the professional and amateur photography community in the Middle East and Africa. I’ve been humbled to learn bits and pieces from an unbelievable roster of GPP teachers. Because Eric is one of the instructors and I’m his glorified help, I have had access to many of the instructors – picking their brains during cab rides, over rooftop cocktails, or at breakfast club. At the 2016 event, I decided to bring some work to show the photographers. I brought along my Havana project, shot...

Photos and presets “Not Recoverable” says Adobe as Lightroom update deletes customer images

It seems that Canon isn’t the only company having issues holding onto its customers’ images right now. A recent Adobe Lightroom update appears to have deleted images and presets for many of its users, too. Users on Facebook, Reddit and Adobe’s own forums had noticed that their work had disappeared with one noting that they’d lost over 2 years worth of edits. That last one said they spoke with Adobe Customer Service for more than four hours over a two day period and were finally told that there is no fix and the lost images are unrecoverable. Adobe has since acknowledged the issue publicly, stating that the problem is limited to iPhone and iPad version 5.4.0 and that the files are definitely not recoverable. Some customers who updated to Lightroom 5.4.0 on iPhone and iPad may be missing p...

Every Day — Photography by Dmitri Pryahin

Every Day, a unique photo project by Russian photographer Dmitri Pryahin. Dmitri Pryahin is a Saint Petersburg-based photographer specializing in experimental and artistic photo projects. His images are clearly not what most people expect when thinking of portrait photography. The Russian photographer often depicts people in unconventional poses and facial expressions. Consisting of several image pairings set side by side, Dmitri Pryahin’s photo series ‘Every Day’ shows various scenes of people in different places along with kind of disturbing close-ups that pull the viewer under their spell. It seems the photographer is more interested in showcasing our most hidden states of mind instead of taking photographs of an opaque shell. Below you can see a selection of photographs...
The Joy of the Photo Walk

The Joy of the Photo Walk

I haven’t shot a single portrait since the Covid-19 crisis began. There’s been one upside to this Coronavirus mess: I’ve rediscovered my love of the photo walk. Working from home was turning my legs to jelly, so in June, I committed to walking as much as possible, camera in hand. I’m now up to about 60 miles per week and looking to take it higher. (This is a screenshot of my FitBit App. There are about 2,000 steps in a mile.) A photo walk combines two of my greatest passions: photography and walking around New York City. But you know what’s really important? Photo walking also reinforces a sense of play. Instead of pigeonholing myself as one kind of photographer, I just play. I’m a portrait photographer: And a street photographer: And a landscape photograp...

Review of the Hasselblad X1D II 50C Medium Format Mirrorless Camera

It is difficult for me to decide whether the following words constitute a true technical review or more of a personal reflection on the merits of digital medium format photography. Is a physically larger, medium format digital sensor truly that much different from smaller full-frame sensors in today’s ultra-high megapixel digital world? Whatever this bit of writing turns out to be in the end, one thing is for certain… … it’s a love story. Knowing this at the onset, we can proceed with our course—first, a bit of situational background on the business at hand. I was fortunate enough to shoot with the Hasselblad X1D II 50C for about two weeks this month. Accompanying the camera was a pre-release version of Hasselblad’s 80mm f/1.9, which is the fastest lens in their XCD line of X-series g...

Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | Google Podcasts | RSS One of the great frustrations in the digital age is that e easy it is to make your photography available to the world, yet so difficult to get people’s attention and to take the time to look. Street and documentary photographer Chris Suspect, the Street Photography Magazine featured photographer in August 2020 issue, has figured it out. He regularly enters his work in competitions, attends festivals (at least he did when you could do that sort of thing) and just getting to know people personally. And most recently is self publishing a series of photo books, which have been very successful. After speaking with Chris I realized that he is the living embodiment of the old adage “Don’t wait for th...
