Google: Crawling Bandwidth Benefit To Using jpeg vs webp But Minimal

Google's John Mueller said on Twitter there is maybe a small bandwidth savings when it comes to GoogleBot crawling your site when you use webp over jpeg image formats. But then you would only see that difference when the site is a "very image-heavy site." So normal sites probably wouldn't really see any bandwidth savings there. Here was the question:when you have both jpeg/webp version of an image. Is there a benefit/downside to serve the WebP version to the crawler vs the more generic .jpg? #SEO #Images #WebP @JohnMu @Kevin_Indig— Tim Vereecke (@TimVereecke) August 26, 2020 Kevin Indig and John Mueller responded similarly:I think the primary difference you'd see is with regards to bandwidth needed for crawling (and probably that wouldn't be too massive unless it's a very image-heav...

5 Themes in CMO Sentiment from Gartner 2020-21 Spend Survey

Written by: Marianna Morris & Jordan Frank The first half of 2020 kicked off strongly, seeing year-over-year growth in global marketing budgets. Then, on the heels of one of the most transformative periods in recent history, we saw the world economy shift to crisis mode as the COVID-19 pandemic called for worldwide shut downs and stay-at-home orders. As brands pivoted to crisis communication and risk mitigation, we saw CMOs react similarly in response, pulling back spend to prioritize cash flow and ROI. Now, six months later, as the world has begun to enter the recovery phase, CMOs are keen on what the new normal looks like for their businesses and how to rebuild the path forward in what is still an uncertain future. Recently, Gartner released their Annual CMO Spend Survey, which s...

Ben Fisher said on Twitter, "Claim This Business (CTB) now opens in a new window. Clicking Manage Now starts the verification process and adds it to Google My Business without having to go to Google My Business web."Here is a screen shot but you can try it yourself:This might speed up the process and encourage more to claim their businesses...Forum discussion at Twitter.

Google Explains Why You Probably Didn’t Get Into The Virtual Webmaster Unconference

As you know, the Google virtual webmaster "unconference" is taking place today. It was sold out within a few hours after it launched and thus Google promised to hold a more formal virtual conference to fit more people later this year. Google also briefly explained why it couldn't let more people into this event earlier. But now, Martin Splitt of Google, one of the people, along with Aurora Morales, preparing for this conference, explained in more detail about why so many people could not be part of this event. He posted all of this on Twitter but in summary, he was "heartbroken" that he couldn't let everyone in. He said because of the nature of this "unconference" it is a "test event" and the company does not "know yet how well it'll go" and thus wants to "limit (possibly bad) impact...

Google Charge For Access Free Search Results? Doubt It, Says John Mueller.

Could you imagine if Google charged a fee for you to enter a query into its search box? Back in the old days, you had to purchase a license to search librarian databases (maybe even today). But imagine if Google charged a fee, like a toll booth, to the web.John Mueller from Google was asked if Google would ever do that and he said he doubts it. Here are those tweets:I can't look that far into the future :-), but I really doubt it.— 🍌 John 🍌 (@JohnMu) August 26, 2020 Legally, I wonder if Google can even do that. Crawl your content, show your content to people, but charge those people to see content that is not owned by them? I guess Google provides the search service, so they would charge for the search, not the content. But anyway, it wouldn't make business sense for Google to d...

That is the feeling recently since we saw a couple search ranking (or indexing) bugs a couple of weeks ago and it has been 3 months and 22 days since the last core update, the Google May 2020 Core update was on May 4th.In fact, the last Google search ranking tremors, even unconfirmed, was on August 6th or 7th, this does not include the ranking and indexing bugs we saw since then. The SEO community is getting antsy and nervous. They are bracing themselves and anxiously awaiting the next core update. We are due one any day now and I suspect we will have one in the upcoming weeks. Will it be an August 2020 or September 2020 core update is to be determined but it should be coming soon. Some ...
