JobKeeper extension will “save businesses”: TAA

Many jobs in the hotel industry have been saved through the extension of JobKeeper, says TAA. Tourism Accommodation Australia CEO, Michael Johnson, has issued praise on behalf of members to the Federal Government for the decision yesterday to extend the JobKeeper wage subsidy by a further six months. Johnson said that with international borders closed and varying levels of nerves on domestic borders keeping domestic tourism in check for the time being, JobKeeper was the only way to keep the sector viable. “It is good to see the Government acknowledge sectors like ours are suffering more than others and will continue to suffer into the future,” he said. “The announcement by the Government today will go a long way towards saving businesses and keeping our staff in jobs after September. ...

On the Frontline – the COVID-19 experience through the eyes of hospitality workers

You don’t have to look far to find examples of the personal experience of medical staff, nurses and doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic. But these are only a sample of the so-called “front-line” workers who are dealing with the day to day realities of working within this new world with all of it’s challenges. Hotel workers, housekeepers and aged care staff are just some of the dedicated professionals working within the confines of this new framework of rules and regulations designed to keep us all safe. Exclusive: Industry embraces JobKeeper extension security

Australian PM, Scott Morrison has extended JobKeeper by six months to the delight of tourism. Sentiments across the hotel sector, along with hospitality and tourism at its widest, have been buoyed in the short term with the news the Federal Government will modify, but extend its JobKeeper wage subsidy until March 2021. The multi-billion dollar scheme has largely stymied a human resources catastrophe across the sector but will be reduced from its current $1,500 per fortnight to $1,200 from October through December and then to $1,000 for the final three months of its life. The reasoning behind the move is the hopeful expectation that Australia has the COVID-19 pandemic under control to the point where state borders can be fully relaxed and consideration can go into reopening Australia t...

Qantas’ new Orange flights a major boost for regional tourism

Qantas’ new flights between Sydney and Orange, which launched this week (Jul 20), are providing Central New South Wales with a much-needed tourism boost. The inaugural flight, originally scheduled for earlier this year and operated for the first time on Monday, comes as the region continues its post-COVID recovery. Orange Mayor, Reg Kidd, said the economic impact would be significant. “Orange has been very popular with visitors since travel restrictions were eased and having an extra airline is going to make it even easier to bring them here,” he said. “These additional flights will make our fantastic parks, specialty stores, wineries and restaurants more accessible to tourists, while also making it easier to work and do business in the region.” The flights are operated with a 36-seat ...

Ovolo staff to wear masks in Australian industry first

Ovolo has become the first Australian hotel company requiring all guest-facing staff to wear masks. Front-line guest-facing staff at all Ovolo Group hotels in Australia will be required to wear face masks under a new directive from the company aimed at helping to stop the spread of COVID-19. The move is an extension of the company’s ‘OC/DC’ or ‘Obsessive Commitment to Deep Cleaning’ mantra and is based on documented research showing a significant reduction in the possibility of catching Coronavirus through wearing a mask. Masks will also be provided to guests along with information in-room about the OC/DC pledge in an effort to provide reassurance during their stay. Ovolo Group Founder and CEO, Girish Jhnujhnuwala, said that while he was disappointed guests won’t be able to see the be...
